According to regional lore, Jeen Mata and her elder brother Harsh were deeply devoted siblings. Following a family misunderstanding, Jeen Mata renounced worldly comforts and ascended the peak of the Rewasa hills to perform intense penance (tapasya) to Goddess Bhagwati.
Moved by her devotion, Lord Shiva and Goddess Durga blessed her with supreme divinity as a protector deity. Her brother Harsh meditated on an adjacent mountain peak, now famous as the Harshnath Temple (Lord Bhairava shrine). When the Mughal army under Aurangzeb attempted to desecrate the temple, swarms of divine bees (Bhamar) attacked the soldiers, forcing the Emperor to beg for forgiveness and send pure oil to sustain the eternal flame (Akhand Jyoti), a tradition preserved for centuries.
